Forget everything you’ve read about The Lone Ranger. If you knew nothing about this project except this poster, a reasonable reaction might be “Hey, Johnny Depp’s playing Lone Ranger. I can see that.” This production’s seen troubles bordering on legendary, even by Hollywood standards. Budgetary delays, rewrites, the star’s insistence on playing a supporting character, all leading up to a crew member suffering a heart attack and drowning in a dunk tank last week.
But at least they got the poster right. At least I think they did. I’m not entirely certain who or what I’m looking at. Is the tree supposed to represent Tonto or the Ranger? And why does the tree have eyes? Will all the trees have eyes or is this some sort of special tree? What is a horseshoe?
