It feels like we’ve been debating Spy Hunter‘s big screen potential for years. Talk of a film was first made public back in 2004, with John Woo attached to direct and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson attached to star – Johnson even went as far as lending his likeness to a game sequel in 2006. This gave way to Paul W.S. Anderson coming on board and contributing a lot of nothing. When his involvement fell apart he went on to employ many of the same ideas in his Death Race 2000 remake.
It seems as if Warner Brothers is still keen to make this film here in 2012, as Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer is now the latest filmmaker to become attached to the project. Fleisher is rumored to be bringing his own screenwriter onboard to adapt the material, and let’s hope that writer is creative. The Midway game is about a spy who drives an armored sports car that can turn into a boat – that’s it. I do love my water sports, but that’s not a premise that can hold my attention for longer than a level or two.
