The Pitch

If your wife gets attacked, Nick Cage will call someone else to kill him for you.

The Humans

Nicholas Cage, Guy Pearce, January Jones, Xander Berekely

The Nutshell

At the hospital, waiting for news about his wife’s condition, Will is approached by Simon, (Guy Pearce) who proposes an intriguing offer: Simon will arrange to have a complete stranger exact vengeance on Laura’s attacker, in exchange for a favor from Will in the near future. Distraught and grief-stricken, Will consents to the deal, unwittingly pulling himself into a dangerous underground vigilante operation. While continuing to protect his wife from the truth, he quickly discovers that his quest for justice could lead to frightening and deadly consequences.

The Lowdown

In Seeking Justice, Nicholas Cage plays Will Gerard, a high school teacher in post-Katrina New Orleans. Will is a happy go lucky kind of guy. He has a beautiful young wife, a rewarding job and he lives in a city he loves. He is truly enjoying life until things go horribly wrong… as if we didn’t see that coming. Our main character has turned to bad people to avenge an attack on his wife, and this basic premise is solid enough to carry the film quite a long way, along with a crime and poverty ravaged New Orleans as an interesting enough setting.

You talkin’ to me?

There are good people in Seeking Justice, including Will,  who are trying to make New Orleans a better place to live on way or another. Is that effort  satisfying enough when a tragedy strikes close to home? Is it necessary to take matters into your own hands in order to ensure the safety of your loved ones? When Will’s life is turned upside by the brutal rape of his wife Laura (Jones), he is forced to ask himself these very questions.  He decides to turn to a shadowy figure known only as Simon (Pierce) who offers a chance at revenge. This of course all goes horribly wrong, sending the story into an effective enough sprint to the finish. While there are some plot holes and gaps in logic at times, the film holds together pretty well for the most part and even succeeds in delivering several unpredictable twists. While its not exactly a non-stop action affair, the plot is paced well and moves swiftly enough to never get bogged down or boring.

Cage nails this character because it seems to be written specifically for him. He has always excelled at portraying the extreme ends of the emotional spectrum and in this role he gets to visit many of them. This list includes “care-free party animal”, “the super intense and caring teacher figure” and of course “frightened to death fish out of water”. Seeking Justice is sort of the perfect film for Nicholas Cage to be a part of. There’s no hype, no expectations, no trailer that looks pretty cool and inevitably leads you to be let down. It’s not in mind blowing 3D, it’s not tied to Marvel or a Superhero and you haven’t been waiting a long time to see it. Instead it’s quite the opposite; a direct to video thriller that pretty much lets Nick Cage play Nick Cage and pleasantly surprise you with any level of enjoyment that you end up pulling out of it.

I specifically said no anchovies!

Pierce also shines in his role as a slimy mystery man. He has a certain presence that lets you know he’s definitely up to something, but doesn’t play it over the top enough to clue you in on exactly what that is before its time for the reveal. January Jones is believable enough as the tortured victim and Harold Perrineau, most recently of Lost and Sons of Anarchy, is an additional treat.

All in all, Seeking Justice is a nice little revenge film with a twist. It accomplishes what it sets out to do and moves along briskly in the process. While you may question the actions of its characters at times, it never takes you out of the movie and is made up for with a cast that is giving their all. Assuming you had low or no expectations for it like me, you may find Seeking Justice to be a pleasant surprise.

This is my new action vehicle. See what I did there?

The Package

There aren’t many special features work speaking of at all here. The seven minute “behind the scenes” feature is pretty much a generic collection of on set interviews devoid of anything interesting or noteworthy. A DVD copy of the film is also included.
