Believe it or not, it’s been almost a full 14 months since theatergoers first witnessed the face of god in Raja Gosnell’s seminal The Smurfs. Some wondered if Gosnell betrayed his artistic integrity in moving so quickly to direct a sequel, but we know better. The tome of these Smurfs is long and captivating, filled with danger and spellbinding adventure.
Once it became apparent we were getting a Smurfs 2, we questioned whether or not Gosnell had the stones to introduce The Naughties so early into the Smurfs’ foray into film. But, as you can see from the above picture, Gosnell got stones. Gosnell got mad stones:
“They’re not bad, they’re misguided,” says director Raja Gosnell. “They’re just products of their upbringing. And they haven’t had the best upbringing, let’s say.”
And cancel that appointment with your therapist – we can confirm that yes, Katy Perry and George Lopez will be reprising their roles as Smurfette and Grouchy Smurf respectively. Knowing that the band is back together, can we expect lighting to strike twice? Unknown, but Gosnell and company certainly have lofty expectations to live up to.
None more lofty.
