Last night during the AFI’s tenth anniversary of 100 Movies, 100 Years (isn’t that 110 years?), Warner Bros aired an ad for Blade Runner: The Final Cut. There’s been a lot of secrecy about this project, but I can tell you that as someone who isn’t even a big fan of the movie that this is going to be a DVD release that will redefine what a Special Edition is – and sadly, Blade Runner is really one of the last films that needs a Special Edition of this magnitude. In some ways this DVD will be the pinnacle of the form, while also being the last of the great ones… at least until some of the films from 1999 get to be 25 years old and ripe for revisiting.
