Advertising & Reviews.

I’m a one site guy when it comes to video games. IGN. A majority of the
RSS feeds in my Firefox browser that aren’t CHUD related are IGN’s
feeds for their PSP, DS, WII, PS3, and XBOX 360 sections. Huge fan. I
trust those guys rather implicitly, especially ol’ Hilary when it comes
to baseball games. As a former IGN editor [DVD back in the day] I feel
a kinship to that place and Steven Horn over there is a guy I consider
a friend for life.

That said…

They messed up with their decision to run their Godzilla Unleashed
review for the Wii two months to the day after its release. Two months!
Now, if you are an avid reader like me you’d know that IGN blew the doors
out in their coverage for the game. A Developer Blog, lots of
exclusives, and advertisements out the ass.

I am a huge Godzilla
fan, as is my daughter. We fully planned to get the game upon release,
with me holding out hope it’d have been reviewed before we committed.
The holidays came and somehow the game eluded us. My Wii and Godzilla
didn’t cross paths. Then, I realized that the new crop of basketball
games for my 360 were really hard to navigate through and without a
player creation option I rarely see the point in a sports game of any
sort.

Tiger Woods, you have spoiled us.

So I decided to trade those games in and what did I see on the shelf but Godzilla Unleashed.
I had free credit so I nabbed it [and the lovely new Advance Wars]. I
haven’t played it yet but we opened it and Sofia went through the
manual with a fine toothed comb, asking all sorts of questions about
the monsters. I for one am very proud to see Biollante getting his due.

Now,
after the hype and advertising has died, their review goes up. And it
gets ripped. The game probably sucks. I’m not saying that I need a
Godzilla game to be good. Expecting great quality from a Godzilla
product is like expecting interesting conversations with a 15 year old
boy. But it would have been nice to have a clue.

Am I going to change where I get my video game news? Nah. But I’m watching you boys…

– Nick Nunziata is glad he didn’t get the DS version. That’s an abyss.

And now… a Mary Worth War Strip from the vault…
