I have a lot of skepticism that Avatar 2 is going to happen*, but if it does James Cameron has made it clear where he wants to set the film: in Pandora’s oceans.

‘Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest,’ Cameron told the LA Times while shilling this Thursday’s release of Avatar on Blu-Ray. ‘I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.’

Cameron also said that he has plans through to the third movie, which would be spread out more across the rest of the Centauri AB system where Pandora is located. We’ve seen the jungle planet, so maybe now we can see the desert planet and the ice planet and the cloud city planet!

The director also confirmed that Avatar is returning to theaters this August with an additional six minutes of footage. But he’s bringing the movie back to theaters for a very good reason. ‘[W]e know we left money on the table there.’ Oh. Well, anyway, Cameron thinks that Avatar could have made a lot more money if they hadn’t been forced to cede their 3D screens to Alice in Wonderland. You would think a great movie would keep doing well on 2D screens too, though. Weird!

* Just because I feel like Cameron is a guy who doesn’t like sitting still. I could be wrong on this, and have been before.
