The Russian red band trailer for Wanted already hit the web, and from what I understand, the English version doesn’t really add much… except English, I guess. One thing that seeing the trailer in English does give you is an understanding of James McAvoy’s American accent, which I will kindly refer to as ‘bad.’
The trailer itself is pretty cool, even if I fear we’ve seen all of the film’s hits in action. I have to keep reminding myself that this movie actually has zero to do with Mark Millar’s comic of the same name, despite the marketing attempting to make the film an adaptation. I tried to pick out almost anything in that trailer that felt like it really came from the comic, and aside from the lead’s name I couldn’t.
But I remain optimistic! There are some cool visual moments from Timur Bekmambetov in there, especially ‘Fuck You’ on the keys when McAvoy hits the dude in the face with his keyboard – very reminiscent of the fun subtitles in Night Watch and Day Watch. I see the film Thursday, so I’ll let you guys know what I think.
And I’m sure you’ve all seen this bit of viral video, but it connects because it turns out that Bekmambetov directed it as a tie-in to Wanted. I had seen this shit turn up all over the web and people believing it’s real, which baffled me at the time. The thing was obviously fake – a freak out of this magnitude caught on security camera is 100% making CNN – but I couldn’t figure out who made it and why. Now I know!
