Bourne skewedThere’s many things that I can tell you about the upcoming ping-pong comedy Balls of Fury. I can emphasize that Christopher Walken will be hamming it up in a kimono and ridiculous hair. I can remind you that it is yet another The State-affiliated film as it’s directed by Robert Ben-Garant and has Thomas Lennon in it. I can stress that the smoking Maggie Q stars in it, along with smaller turns from the likes of Terry Crews, Patton Oswalt, and Toby Huss. I can even point out that it’s about the clandestine world of underground ping-pong tournaments, and we all know how shady that scene is. But just in case all of these things unduly get your hopes up, I also wanted to remind you that George Lopez is one of the bigger stars in terms of focus and screentime here (which counts for, like, 15 strikes against any film), so let’s temper that excitement a bit, lest we get some hurt feelings, ok?

That being said, I think it’s a funny trailer, and definitely the best look I’ve seen for this film thus far. And it’s nice to get a sports comedy that doesn’t prominently feature Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, or Vince Vaughn. But I’m not so sure about making “From the makers of Reno 911…” a big part of the marketing campaign after the church mouse-like impact that movie made earlier this year. Hopefully, that won’t matter, as the film lands this fall in a relatively weak weekend with no other comedies to compete against save for the Will Arnett/Will Forte flick The Brothers Solomon dropping a week before.
