The inimitable Ms. Ronan’s first name “Saoirse” refers to the Irish word for “freedom,” which is appropriate enough as the young actress has by her 18th year already developed a career in which she can do nearly anything. From her blow-out debut as an Oscar-nominated teenager for her work in Atonement, to the action spectacular Hanna last year, she’s proven here range and ability more thoroughly than many actresses twice her age. With a lead in the blockbuster The Host next year, she’s also well on her way to being a very marketable name.

Most recently I was happy to see Ronan take an interesting turn alongside Alexis Bledel in Violet & Daisy –which I thoroughly enjoyed and reviewed from the Savannah Film Festival– and I’m just as pleased to hear she’ll be appearing in the next Wes Anderson film, Grand Budapest Hotel along with Bill Murray, Jude Law, Ralph Fiennes, and Jason Schwartzman (no Johnny Depp). Not only that, but she’s actually taking on the female lead.

Ms. Ronan is gifted with a very unique beauty and the kind of vaguely mysterious way about her that makes her a perfect addition to Anderson’s affected cinematic universe. Looks like getting snuffed out by Stanley Tucci isn’t all that bad after all, as Ronan looks to have a very fruitful few years ahead of her.

Anderson should be rolling on the 1920s period piece by early 2013, and you’ll see Ronan in Violet & Daisy and The Host around that time as well.
