UPDATE: Thanks to Moises and Jamie, who linked me to BTTF.com’s interview with Zemeckis where he revealed: ‘And since everyone wants to know, there are three very brief snippets of Eric Stoltz incorporated into one of the documentaries.’

Snippets! A move in the right direction. Maybe the 30th anniversary will bring us more extensive footage, or even an option to watch the completed sections of the film with Stoltz in them!

I’m a pretty big fan of the Back to the Future trilogy. I think the first film is a perfect movie, and I think the third film is massively underrated. I’m excited about the trilogy coming to Blu-Ray this year, as just announced by Universal. But I’m still bummed… 25 years later and it looks like there’s still no Eric Stoltz footage being released.

Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly, and a large amount of shooting was completed with him in the role (five weeks!), but producer Steven Spielberg and director Robert Zemeckis thought he was just too intense for the role. They scrapped him, and the weeks of footage they had shot, and got their original first choice, Michael J. Fox. It was a risky, expensive move, but it paid off.

Somewhere there is footage of Stoltz as Marty. It has never seen the light of day, probably to protect Stoltz’s feelings (or as a function of his contract termination), but it’s out there. And dammit, I want to see it. It’s been 25 years. Stoltz has had his own career. This feels like a major bit of movie history that would be intriguing for fans to see, and a Blu-Ray would be the ideal place to see it.

But the new 25th anniversary Blu doesn’t seem to have any of that footage; I’m not even sure how much actually ‘new’ stuff is on the set. Maybe for the 50th we can finally see Eric Stoltz’ too intense Marty McFly in action.

Here are the specs, courtesy of Universal. The new edition comes out on October 26… exactly 25 years after Marty traveled through time.
