Tribeca has just announced their full slate of films for 2010, and despite kicking off with Shrek Forever After (seriously) there once again looks like there’s a ton of must-see films playing for New Yorkers.
The one that should have genre fans most excited? Shinya Tsukamoto’s second sequel to his cult classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man! Not sure how this flew under my radar, but Tetsuo: The Bulletman looks as gloriously insane as you’d expect.
The director of Once (John Carney) has a film called Zonad about an alien visiting 1950s Ireland, which is part of the fest’s quirky genre lineup. The rest of the “Cinemania” flicks certainly sound fun- like Ticked -Off Trannies With Knives (it’s just what it sounds like), Vietnamese box office smash Clash, and Hong Kong Grand Guignol flick Dream Home. The fest will also showcase a restored version of Doctor Zhivago!

Expect as many reviews from the fest as I can humanly write, and please leave comments if you’d like to see a specific film covered. Below I’ve included links to my reviews from last year, along with thoughts on the films a year later. Hope you enjoy them and find something worth tracking down.
Yodok Stories – Really haunting film that will completely influence your opinion of North Korea. It’s half documentary/half musical about real-life concentration camps, so while it’s not exactly the ideal date movie it’s well worth a watch (if you can stomach it.)
Racing Dreams – One of the best films I saw at the fest, which went home with the Best Documentary award. So where the hell is it? It’s still playing festivals but someone better pick this sucker up because I can’t wait to check it out again. It’s a really beautiful and heartbreaking doc about Nascar racers in training- who would have thought?
Black Dynamite – A lot of people are liking this one a lot more than I did, which is strange to me. Still feel like I’m Gonna Git You Sucka is a much better spoof of the Blaxploitation genre, although Jai White is certainly the highlight here. DYN-O-MITE! DYN-O-MITE!
Hysterical Psycho – I forgot I even saw this movie, if that tells you how much it stuck with me.
In The Loop – Have seen it five times now, and it still holds up as the funniest film of the last few years. Even the script had me laughing out loud like an idiot.
Cropsy
– Very interesting doc about an accused child murderer that I’ve
brought up a few times in talks with folks about the insane asylums on
Staten Island. Sad that this hasn’t seen release yet- it’s a film that would fit in perfectly on Netflix Instant.
Moon – Having since revisited this, I’d give it a higher score today. Works even better a second time around when you already have had your head wrapped around the “twist”, and if you turn the movie off 15 seconds before the end to eliminate that horrible and needless coda.
