csaI am reading Steve Martin’s Shopgirl right now. I may in fact be done with it by the time you read this, as it’s a very slight book – but also very lovely. It’s a sweet and funny and most of all honest story about people trying to make their lives fit together.

It’s been a while since Martin has starred in a movie I would even consider seeing, so the film adaptation of Shopgirl is a joy for me. His career should be split between Shopgirls and Bowfingers, not Cheaper by the Dozens and Bringing Down the Houses. At any rate, the trailer for the new film is here, and it looks quite good. A couple of my favorite moments seem to have made it into the movie whole, and Claire Danes looks perfect as Mirabelle, the titular shopgirl. (Jason Schwartzman may be a little too smart to play slacker Jeremy, but we’ll see if he can pull it off).

You can check out the trailer by clicking here. Shopgirl hits theaters October 21, possibly in time to earn Steve Martin an Oscar nod.
