You can tell the Production Design department is doing their job on Tom Hooper’s Les Miserable, if simply because it looks epic, rich, and like a largely unpleasant world to inhabit if you’re not among the well-costumed wealthy. The film definitely looks big- it should make quite the splash this December. Perhaps Tom Hooper will be reacquainted with the Academy stage just that quickly.

In any event, a huge batch of production stills, behind-the-scenes photos, and small character portraits have hit the web, so explore the gallery below.

It’s funny, Les Mis remains the only Broadway show I’ve ever seen, having done so on a trip to New York with my parents when I was no older than five or six years. I’d love to say I was immediately transfixed and wrapped up in the powerful storytelling even at that age, but I remember waggling my legs and wondering what the fuck was going on for four+ hours. Perhaps Jackman and co. will make me a convert after all these years…

The film is directed by Tom Hooper, written by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer, and stars an ensemble cast led by Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter, Samantha Barks and Aaron Tveit complete the cast. The film tells the story of Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who becomes mayor of a town in France. Valjean agrees to take care of Cosette, the illegitimate daughter of Fantine, and must avoid being captured again by Javert, a police inspector.
