Right at the end of last week I ran the new poster for Miranda July’s new film, along with the odd little synopsis that went with it.

THE FUTURE tells the story of a thirty-something couple who, on deciding to adopt a stray cat, change their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in each other and themselves.

Well now there’s a trailer to go along with them and I’ll be damned if the trailer isn’t pretty much exactly like the synopsis. It’s got as much precious/quirky/awkward whathaveyou that you might expect from another July film (a talking moon, youthfully wise old man, etc), but it looks like fun nonetheless. People dealing with their own mortality is always a very ripe subject for cinema, and July looks to be having some fun tackling those themes with her own unique eye. July is as charming as ever in the trailer, and this time she’s joined by Hamish Linklater, who is a hell of a double for her.

I already mentioned that I’m a sucker for the cat angle, but beyond that this comes from good stock. You and Me and Everyone We Know is the kind of indie movie that helped define “indie” as a stylistic sensibility, rather than just general term for a non-studio film, and it’s one of the good ones. It’s one of the films that has inspired so many trite photocopies, rather than being one itself.

Watch the good-looking trailer in HD at Apple Trailers, and keep an eye on your art theater’s bookings around July 29th.
