I’ve given Paramount some considerable shit about their new Star Trek movie and their recent Hipster Outreach Program for it. But while some of you may think I’m hopelessly biased, I’m actually very open minded, and when they do something right, I have to give them big props. Last night’s surprise world premiere in Austin was done right. Drew McWeeny at HitFix is already calling the summer for Star Trek, and this screening surely blew the buzzmeter right off the chart.

Of course while Paramount gets plenty of credit, much of the shenanigans last night bear the unmistakable fingerprints of the Greatest Living Cinema Showman, Tim League. The way that Wrath of Khan melted in the projector? Vintage Tim.

So you’ve read the reviews and heard the buzz, but you’re curious about how it went down on the night. Luckily the whole event was caught on tape. Below is the part of the evening where, after Khan melted, new Trek writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are ‘stalling’ as Tim deals with the mess in the projection booth. Suddenly, a figure enters from stage left…

I can’t wait to see this new Trek for myself, but in the meantime, hats off to everyone who managed to create one of the great geek moments of 2009.
