There
is only one must-have blu-ray hitting this year, and that, my friends,
is Hausu (reviewed here). The
utterly insane flick enjoyed an extended theatrical run around the country with packed houses full of people who had no idea what they were in for, but now
it’s coming home in both dvd and blu-ray editions, courtesy of the
one and only Criterion.

Here’s the list of features-

New, restored high-definition digital transfer (with uncompressed
monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)

*
Constructing a House, a new video piece featuring interviews with
director Nobuhiko Obayashi, story scenarist and daughter of the director
Chigumi Obayashi, and screenwriter Chiho Katsura

*
Emotion, a 1966 experimental film by Obayashi

*
New video appreciation by director Ti West (
House of the Devil)
*
Theatrical trailer

*
New and improved English subtitle translation

*
PLUS: An essay by Chuck Stephens

Pick this up when it hits on October 26th, chewers. I guarantee you a good time… or at least one that will absolutely confuse you and your emotions and make you question your senses.

Of course, this isn’t the only great film that Criterion has planned for the future– there are also released like Crumb, The Magician, The Thin Red Line, and Paths of Glory. For more Obayashi wackiness, check out his commercials with Charles Bronson.
