It took me a moment to realize that The Collection actually is a sequel to 2009’s low-grossing horror film The Collector, as the trailer is much more concerned with emphasizing the connection to the dormant Saw franchise than a horror film that was only in 1,300 theaters three years ago. Ultimately it doesn’t much matter that it’s a sequel as the story — the survivor of a psychopath’s death trap is forced to return to rescue a rich man’s daughter — stands alone well enough as an excuse to grind some assholes through inventive gore-creation apparatuses.
I never saw the original film, (Nick certainly wasn’t a fan) but the scale certainly seems to have been jacked up quite a bit, with plenty of references to the first for fans. Take a look.
I’ll grant that I’m much more interested in this than I ever was in a Saw sequel, so it’s got that going for it. I should be catching it at Fantastic Fest soon, so keep your eyes peeled…
