Dumping
3D glasses into those cardboard bins at the movie theater is a moment
of great trust. You just sort of assume that happy theater employees
will take those glasses, sterilize them, and then give them out to folks
at a later show. But that’s not the case. Good Housekeeping did tests
on 3D glasses and found them to be disgusting, and to include such
bacteria as Staphylococcus aureus, aka the fucker that will give you a
Staph infection.

“We expected to find general
bacteria — nothing is sterile, but staph is not something to take
lightly,”
Good Housekeeping’s
Carolyn Forte says. “We’re not saying that these glasses will make you
sick, but kids touch the glasses, touch their eyes and mouths — the
potential is there.”

Other
nasties found on glasses – including ones wrapped in plastic – include
bugs that cause conjuctivitis, sepsis and food poisoning. Doctors tell ABC
News
that this probably isn’t that
big a deal, although having the glasses near your eyes and mucous
membranes could be troubling.

Still, even if it’s tough to get sick
from the 3D glasses there’s the ick factor. It’s just gross knowing
that you’re putting some kind of filthy thing on your face. I bet Howie
Mandell can never go to another 3D movie after this.
