Sam Raimi’s done westerns before, but not like this.
Heat Vision is reporting that the legend is now attached to direct Earp: Saints for Sinners, an adaptation of a Radical Publishing graphic novel. While the comic is indeed about Wyatt Earp and the O.K. Corral (you have seen Tombstone, right?) it’s set in the future. Think postapocalyptic wasteland, and Earp taking out outlaws in a destroyed Las Vegas with much-improved weaponry.
In a world where the American economy has all but collapsed to the levels of the Great Depression, infamous bandits roam the country and the law is as corrupt as the criminals its sworn to stop. Yet one lawman remains a steadfast moral compass for the people: WYATT EARP. Earp has collared more most-wanted men than anyone in history – but after a violent assignment claims the life of his brother, Wyatt sets out to forge a simple life in the only boomtown left: Las Vegas. With gorgeous women and free-flowing money on endless tap, Sin City attracts more people than a modern gold rush. Though Earp no longer wears a U.S. Marshall’s badge, his past is about to catch up to him. With nearly everything to lose, Earp will have to beat the odds stacked against him in order to bring old-fashioned justice to Sin City.
The comic was created by Matt Cirulnick and David Manpearl and will be a three issue miniseries, and have all the usual cast of characters that you’d expect (Doc Holliday) and some you might not (Jesse James). It hasn’t even been published yet, but there’s an issue #0 preview that you can pick up on the Radical site for a buck.
Radical Publishing has a creator’s panel scheduled for Comic Con this Thursday that Cirulnick (who will be writing the script) will be attending. Ask him questions there!
My thoughts, not that you asked? Comic doesn’t seem like anything too exciting, but the idea of Sam Raimi doing a postapocalyptic western with vengeful lawmen taking out motorcycle-riding outlaws? Just imagine the possibilities…
