First off, I wasn’t really believing much if any of the following news item concerning a Buffy movie being considered, because such a film has been fanwank for nearly a decade now. If one were the least bit of legitimacy to such a project being considered, that story would be splashed across the internet by now like blood spatter. But then I remembered Devin’s story from last year where the producers, Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui, who still have the rights to the property, were looking to move ahead on a new project without Joss Whedon or any of the participants from his iconic TV show. So that made more sense to me…at first.
The item in question comes via ShowbizSpy (I caught it at Syfy). Reportedly, Vanessa Hudgens turned down a chance to co-star in a Buffy theatrical movie: “She felt that with Twlight still so massive, Buffy would not be the best option right now,” says one source….The project has been shelved for now. That was the first part and the last part of the story. To it I say: big deal. Considering that doing a Buffy movie without Joss Whedon is a bad idea to begin with, even proceeding with it, I doubt the fortunes of such an endeavor would hinge solely on Vanessa Hudgens’ acceptance, even if she were being considered for Buffy herself.
It’s this middle part of the story that got me: The idea was to have Sarah [Michelle Gellar] back but with Vanessa as a fresh, new character. Ahh, there it is. That’s where the whole thing goes off the rails. I think it’s fairly safe to say that if Whedon is not involved, Gellar is not involved. So Hudgens may have indeed turned down the chance to be in a Buffy movie, but I call bullshit that Gellar had any chance of being in it.
