The cast of 2012, Roland Emmerich’s newest world destruction epic, is already quite beefy. John Cusack leads a cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, and Oliver Platt. But Emmerich apparently is not even close to being finished announcing big names for his mighty, frighty movie. “I need more,” Roland greedily said to his casting director. “Get me…the original Butterscotch Stallion.” And, thus, Woody Harrelson was pulled into the on-screen mayhem.
No word yet on what goofy role the soft-spoken Harrelson will inhabit, but the actor will have to craftily evade or unfortunately be killed by either lava, typhoons, or horrifying glaciers – just a few of the natural murderers said to pop up in the film.
Harrelson has quietly been turning in great performance after great performance lately. He was note-perfect as the brilliant but doomed Carson Wells on last year’s No Country for Old Men. He was one of the best things about the recent improv comedy The Grand, where he got to play a character loosely based on legendary card sharp Stu Unger. And he zanily mixed it up all rotoscope style with Robert Downey Jr. in A Scanner Darkly. The guy is great. Now he’s set to stand toe-to-toe with the disaster-conjuring director of A Day After Tomorrow.
