It doesn’t please me to know that we’re all going to have another six months to bitch about how bad the Robocop remake looks, but there it is. In some pretty routine schedule shuffling, Sony has actually made the pretty big move of pushing Robocop into 2014, with a February 7th release. That definitely leaves it outside of any frame where a movie anyone gives a shit about would be released, but whether it’s a movie of fear, effects pipeline pressure, or some other motivation is unclear.

What is interesting is that Neil Blomkamp’s scifi vehicle for Matt Damon, Elysium, has now moved to fill in that vacant slot on August 9th, 2013, pushing the film back six months, but also giving it a more favorable date. I would assume the film won’t benefit effects-wise from the extra time as it’s already likely close to done, but who knows? It will definitely benefit marketing-wise, as they really haven’t done shit to get the word out so far.

It’s pretty easy to read this as good news for one project and bad for another, but ultimately it’s a bunch of esoteric startegizing from Sony execs at play, and may be a set of decisions entirely divorced from the quality of the film’s in question- lame as it is to wait longer for the film I want and to have to hear more about the one I don’t.

Oh, and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 –which could be one of those sequels that blows the original out of the water– will hit on September 27th, 2013.
