There’s no film I’m more looking forward to in 2012 than Prometheus. Absolutely no middle ground about it, it’s either going to be a welcomed addition to the Alien mythos from one of the series’ founding fathers or a glorious misfire. Either way, the project’s certainly an ambitious one and I can’t wait to be first in line when it opens June 8th of next year.
So when director Ridley Scott talks about the project, like he did recently with Wall Street Journal and Speakeasy, my Spock ears tend to perk up. There’s a few interesting tidbits worth sharing:
- Sigourney Weaver will not make a cameo in the film.
- Ridley’s “completely taken off into this cyber world,” embracing both the 3D and CGI elements of the film.
- The last eight minutes of the Prometheus film are where fans will find “pretty good DNA of the ‘Alien’ one.”
That last nugget is the one drawing my attention. We know the film’s a prequel. Just say it Ridley: say “prequel.” All this talk of “shared DNA” is becoming tedious. Especially when we already know that xenomorphs are going to be featured at least somewhat in the film – perhaps even as the proverbial fire that’s stolen from Zeus and passed on to mere mortals. The Greeks can’t bank for shit but they sure as hell weave some decent mythology.
Let’s hope that those last eight minutes are a satisfying conclusion to Prometheus, and not a self-angrandzing wink to a (admittedly great) film that came out in ’79.
