With a solid haul of nearly $28 million in its first three days, Resident Evil 4 3D managed the largest opening of a Resident Evil film yet released as well as the number 1 spot at the domestic box office. The weakness of this last weekend and the 3D premium are factors worth noting, but the franchise has an undeniable momentum that Milla Jovovich herself assured New York Magazine will result in a fifth film.

The indelible ass kicker, who is married to Paul W.S. Anderson and can be trusted to have the most inside of scoops, mentions that ideas have already been floated for another film, and that they’ll be querying the teeming masses for fan suggestions as well.

“We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It’s going to be a more interactive process.”

A cursory glance at Jovovich’s twitter feed doesn’t net any specific calls for fan ideas yet, but there is an obvious and admittedly adorable dedication on Jovovich’s part to pay thanks to each of the fans that tweet at her. In any event, they’re coasting on the power of reasonable budgets and consistent returns at this point, so expect the pair to keep plunging into their personal action playground.

Our own David Oliver had (very) guardedly nice things to say about the newest flick, so maybe they can circle all the way back around to making a good film with number 5.

Apologies for the memonic image, but I recently attended Dragon*Con in Atlanta where I learned that Jovovich’s legacy of the Leeloo strap-costume represents the highest of the high and lowest of the low in convention costumes. Everything that is occasionally right, and so often very very wrong with fan outfits can be summed up with that particular costume.
