Entertainment Weekly got word from the Weinstein Company that the constantly beleaguered studio is looking to sequelize Piranha 3D, despite the fact that the movie only made 10 million bucks this weekend (see my recent Advocate about box office being meaningless, apply here). Apparently the very positive reviews – you know, the ones the Weinsteins were avoiding by not having press screenings in most markets and only showing it to LA press hours before it opened – were part of the decision.

“We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3-D, but cheering for it,” says producer Mark Canton. “And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

According to EW director Alexandre Aja is involved in the potential sequel as well. I think they should be going for James Cameron, personally.

In the meantime I’m taking a wait and see attitude (ie, I’ll wait and see the movie when it’s released).
