45ad6370c7ef52faec013e23bffc983bMust admit- my eyebrows rocketed to the sky when I saw the words “Fight Club sequel.” They came back down to earth with the words right after: “graphic novel.”

Yep, that’s the way to do that.

Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club was of course adapted by David Fincher, spawning one of the most voraciously beloved cult films ever made. It’s 1999 release was among a few pre-turn-of-the-millennium film that had a huge mind-bending impact on kids like me, while Palahniuk’s twisted, hyperbolic satires had a similar impact in book form. Honestly, it’s Fight Club. I don’t need to drone on here. You know the deal.

In any event, at a Comic Con panel this weekend, Palahniuk announced he would indeed be writing a follow-up to the story, and that it will be a serialized comic. Chuck+PalahniukWe’re a few years off, but the writer says he’s already meeting with major comic company artists to develop the book. He even let loose with some details on the book’s setup…

It will likely be a series of books that update the story ten years after the seeming end of Tyler Durden. Nowadays, Tyler is telling the story, lurking inside Jack, and ready to launch a come-back. Jack is oblivious. Marla is bored. Their marriage has run aground on the rocky coastline of middle-aged suburban boredom. It’s only when their little boy disappears, kidnapped by Tyler, that Jack is dragged back into the world of Mayhem.

It will, of course, be dark and messy. Due to contract obligations it can’t come to light for a while. Next year is “Beautiful You,” followed by the story collection. But since the Fight Club sequel will appear serialized in graphic form, my book publisher might allow me to launch it earlier than 2015.

This is pretty much how I would like to see this happen. The stakes are low and it’s been long enough  that Palahniuk isn’t shitting on anything at this point. Who knows, maybe the results will be brilliant and David Fincher will have a hole in his 2015 schedule…
