Nice job, Disney’s clearance department!

It’s amazing to see such an obvious detail slip through the cracks at Disney and Marvel, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One box set will indeed be delayed due to a lawsuit between them and the case-makers who sell Nick Fury’s briefcase. Lest you think he just carried a standard ole briefcase, note that the DVD set is clearly their design, so this is a pretty big screw up.

I’m not particularly well-versed in clearance issues and intellectual property laws, but I know Disney has plenty on their payroll who are, so surely someone’s getting canned for delaying a release this huge over something so silly. ComingSoon has learned that instead of being released this month, the set will hit shelves sometime next spring, and will indeed featured a modified case. Whether or not they’re going to anonymize the briefcase or start from scratch is unclear.

The set, if you haven’t checked it out yet, was slated to include Blu-ray of all Marvel Cinematic Universe films (Iron Man, Iron Man II, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, The Avengers), with the applicable films coming as 3D Blus. The discs would have been (still might be?) housed in cases designed by Matt Ferguson, which ComingSoon also put in front of my eyes for the first time. They’re very nice. Also, props like postcards and a replica Tesseract would be included in the case.

Surely all of those items will still be included next spring- the question is what will house them. And frankly, who needs another briefcase-like DVD case? Get more creative Marvel!

I’m just hoping they don’t toss up their hands, give up, and cram all those discs and props into a replica of Black Widow’s butt.
