vdsI’ve known Brady Hall, the writer and director the very indie feature June & July, for a couple of years – almost completely through the Internet. When he sent me a rough cut of his film on DVD I can’t say I was expecting much – the guy’s previous movies had titles like Polterchrist and Jerkbeast (which you can buy through Film Threat – it’s also available on Netflix). But it turns out that Brady’s heart doesn’t just beat to a Troma-esque rhythm – June & July is a lovely and funny and strange film about the relationship between a brother (July) and his sister June, who has a huge and bizarre secret.

Brady’s submitting the film to Sundance this year, and I think it has a shot. I’m hoping to arrange a phone interview with him (he’s Seattle-based), because I believe that a large chunk of the CHUD.com readership is made up of people who want to make movies, and it’s always great to hear from someone who is doing just that – and without having to move to LA or making a film he doesn’t want to make.

The website for June & July has just added a Quicktime trailer, and I think that the scenes essentially reveal what June’s big secret is. Check it out by clicking here and stay tuned for more on this film as it begins its attempt at Robert Redford’s little indie festival. I’m actually interested in seeing if a real indie film, from a real regional filmmaker, has a shot at this thing anymore, or if you have to have a $5 million movie tailor made for Focus Features. Because that definitely is not what June & July is.
