The teaser trailer for District 9, Neill Blomkamp’s film for producer Peter Jackson (made either as a stopgap before making a Halo movie or instead of making a Halo movie), has some elements that are… pretty familiar. In fact, I’d say that Blomkamp and co-writer Terri Tatchell may have seen the TV miniseries V once or twice. And that they may own the DVD of the great movie Alien Nation.
In District 9 a spaceship full of aliens has appeared over South Africa. A multi-national force is assigned to deal with the new non-human residents, who are kept in a camp, apart from the human population. But tensions are rising, and therein I believe rests the movie.
District 9 looks terrific. That said, if I was working on the V reboot series I’d be a little worried. And if I was Gale Ann Hurd, I’d stop talking up a remake of Alien Nation. It looks like Blomkamp may have slam dunked this.
