We have so many words to describe rehashes of older movies. Remake! Reboot! Reimagining! But how about… sequel?
The producer of the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, Mark Burg (the producer behind the Saw films) talked to Shock Til You Drop and gave some mildly confused quotes about what direction Twisted Pictures is looking to take the Tobe Hooper-created series.
“What we’re going to do with it is bring it to 2010,” says Burg. “Make it current day and come up with a new story that takes some of the basic plot points, if you will, and make it a current day movie.”
Okay, that sounds like a straight up remake. But wait! There’s more:
“It’s 35 years later, there’s a relative going back. Why is he going back? I don’t want to set it in a dusty town. How do we make it more urban but keep that feel. There will be some relatives, some new people. There’s still the subtext of ‘are they eating these people?'”
I get two things from that:
1) Burg doesn’t know what ‘subtext’ means and
2) This is a sequel.
To be fair, Burg says that they don’t have a script yet. And remaking the original so soon after the Platinum Dunes versions may be confusing. So you just make this one a sequel without specifying which film you’re sequelizing (although Burg does indicate they’ll just ignore the PD version).
But this must mean a new Leatherface, right? Or will Leatherface be geriatric? None of this makes sense right now, and judging by Twisted’s output, won’t make sense when the film is released.
