It is going to be very interesting to see what kind of film career Daniel Radcliffe has once Harry Potter is officially all said and done. But I like where things are heading already. The Woman in Black is an early 80’s horror-thriller novel from Susan Hill that tells tale of a young lawyer who is summoned to a small town on the English coast to attend to the funeral of a reclusive old widow. Working alone in her creepy mansion, the lawyer uncovers the town’s tortured secrets — it seems that local children have been dying under mysterious circumstances. When those closest to him become threatened by the vengeful “woman in black,” the lawyer must find a way to break the cycle of terror.
The ghost story has previously been adapted into a stage play, as well as a TV movie written by Nigel Kneale (creator of the Quatermass series). Now it is a feature film coming from the resurrected Hammer label, written by Kick Ass‘s Jane Goldman and directed by Eden Lake‘s James Watkins. Radcliffe of course will be starring as Arthur Kipps, the lawyer. While I have no particular reason to trust Radcliffe’s instincts at this juncture, I have to assume he is being offered everything under the sun – while his career is still white hot – so logically it seems reasonable to assume this film at least had a killer script.
