Well Kosinski’s burned me once, and burned me hardcore, but as a fan of his commercial work, no one was rooting for him harder than I. One can only hope that once freed of the constraints of the Mouse House’s reboot machine, this director’s clear talent can finally shine. I’ll be honest though, after some of the disappointment felt earlier this year, I’m going to be a little wary of any scifi film sporting that desaturated cool look and textured, spare environments, ya know?

That’s a damn gorgeous first image to see from a film for sure, even if we’re kind of riffing hard on Inception right away with the big scifi epic sporting architecture-as-rock cliffs imagery. In this film, Tom Cruise stars as a sort of Wall•E character- the last man on an empty earth who acts as caretakers for the drones that ward off alien attacks. I’m not sure if he fits directly into the synopsis:

A court martial sends a veteran soldier to a distant planet, where he has to destroy the remains of an alien race. The arrival of an unexpected traveler causes him to question what he knows about the planet, his mission, and himself.

…and if he doesn’t I’m wondering if these two bits of promo material are giving away the cash and prizes a little early.

In an any event, the film bows in April of next year, with a week-long exclusive IMAX engagement before its wide April 12th release.
