A press release has just shot off around the world, and now we all scramble to get those sweet sweet Batman clicks. Unfortunately, the news is that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing a beat cop, and Marion Cotillard is playing a Wayne Enterprises board member.

This is according to a WB press release (via /Film).

Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.

Now the thing to note is that while neither may be sporting loaded comic book names, either character could play an unexpectedly large role in the story. There is some speculation (of course) that Miranda Tate is an alias for Tahlia Al Ghul, which isn’t as ridiculous as it could be, considering the League Of Shadows is strongly considered to be the primary device behind the plot of The Dark Knight Rises. Lest we forget that even the Batman Begins toys were labeled in such a way as to hide the Ducard/Ras trick.

Neither actors are ones you would usually cast for minimal supporting roles, but there’s also the chance that Nolan is using his clout and stable of actors to fill out his final Batman film with top-notch talent at every level, regardless of the size of the role. It’s worked for Harry Potter.

What role do you think these folks will play in TDKR? Has their involvement been overhyped, or are we looking at serious misdirection as WB confirms actors that are playing major characters? It’s Batman, so everyone has an opinion- voice it!
