I live in a small town, and just the other day, I had to do the usual thing to get a burger. Drive 7 miles to the next town that has a McDonald’s, Burger King, Dairy Queen, etc. I’ve had to do this my entire driving life. So the phrase going into town is taken literally. Sometimes I wish that I lived in a town where all I have to do is walk a few blocks over and I’m at a Subway or a take out Chinese place (I’d be of Marlon Brando/Orson Welles proportions if I actually lived near one of these)

More often than not, I enjoy the fact that I live in a town that just got a Stripes last year. (That’s a convenience store like 711 or AM/PM for the uninitiated). I enjoy this fact, because it makes me appreciate it more. It makes me appreciate the food I have to drive to get, or when I have to drive 30 miles to get to a Best Buy, when some people live two streets off of one in other towns. It’s always something special for me to go do something like that. A mini trip if you will.

I know one day I will probably live closer to places that I love, and I won’t have to drive 15 miles to see a movie in a theater or get some take out/fast food, but if I don’t, I won’t be all that sad. I’ll still have that appreciation.
