We are 589 days away from the King of All Monsters returning to theatres in Gareth Edward’s Godzilla. That might seem like a long time, nut for a production that’s going to be heavily steeped in post it’s somewhat surprising that we haven’t gotten a sniff at casting yet. It turns out there’s a pretty good reason for that, as a fourth screenwriter has now been brought into the fold to take a crack at the script.
According to Variety, Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) now has four weeks to get the script up to snuff for Legendary. This is a script that’s already passed through the hands of David Goyer (Batman Begins), David Callaham (The Expendables) and Max Borenstein (Law & Order: Christmas Special). Legendary is going on record as saying their only need from Pearce is to “age up” the characters for the desired range in which they wish to cast. It seems likely that it’s more than a minor polish however. Pearce is in high demand as far as screenwriters go. If the studio were looking to make a minor adjustment like the ages of a few characters, they could have gone lower profile.
It could be nothing. Perhaps Edwards just decided he wants to shoot for more mature actors. Still, that seems like an odd realization to be arriving at now. Especially considering the director has been actively involved since January of 2011.
Godzilla vs. Newly Grumpy Old Men is still on track for a May 16th, 2014 release.
