It’s not as if one could reasonably expect an MMA star to build a full acting career off of one cool bit of stunt casting, even if it did result in a pretty spectacular little action film.

Regardless, it’s kind of sad to see Haywire star Gina Carano move from the high-concept world of an auteur action experiment featuring top-tier actors to moving to what will likely be the borderline DTV film, In The Blood. You see, the film is being directed by John Stockwell who, after moving from a solid acting career into feature directing, became responsible for nearly a dozen small horror/action films, with Blue Crush and Into The Blue being the two anomalies you’d likely recognize.

His next film looks like this:

Nothing like a DTV photoshop hatchet job of a poster featuring a fallen Oscar winner in a fake looking bikini.

Admittedly Carano will not be leading In2 The Blue or anything as nakedly low-rent as that. The project is pitched pretty much as Lady Taken, and doesn’t appear to be a production of particularly big scale.

Blood is set in motion when a husband disappears while vacationing in the Caribbean with his wife, to be played by Carano. The grieving wife passionately and recklessly pursues the men whom she believes kidnapped and killed him.

Maybe this will be a small fun action movie, but it’s tough to tell if this is even the kind of thing that can expect a theatrical release. Eric Vespe suggested on twitter that Carano could/should end up in the inevitable Expendables 3, and I think that’s the best fate for her. Unless Soderbergh was able to miraculously get a second Haywire film going, I’d like to see Carano stick to supporting action roles in bigger action movies, rather than being the lead in films stuck in the world of DTV actioners that are typically toplined by rappers and wrestlers.

So think more G.I. Joe 3 or even whatever Statham or Nic Cage is in next, Gina, rather than Blood Games or Game of Blood or Blood Power type shit. I’d like to actually see you in things from time to time.
