Known to gamers as the creator of The Guild, TV junkies as Vi on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Whedon dorks as one of the stars of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Felicia Day certainly gets around. It was just announced that the SciFi Channel (I still refuse to admit the new name…) has nabbed her to star in their upcoming original film Red, which will premiere sometime in 2011.

This is part of their latest series of films which will re-imagine fairy tales in various ways. It kicked off last month with Beauty and the Beasts: A Dark Tale, which starred Estella Warren, and there are adaptations of Sinbad, Aladdin and Hansel & Gretel on the way, sure to be just as quality as most of SciFi’s original programming. (Battlestar sure was an aberration, eh?)

Red is of course a take on the classic Red Riding Hood story, and Felicia Day will star as the titular character, a werewolf-hunting descendant of the original Riding Hood. One day she brings her fiance home to meet her family and he learns that they’re all werewolf hunters, thinking that it’s a joke until he’s bitten by one himself. While her family wants him destroyed, Red tries to find a cure for him. Kavan Smith (Stargate Atlantis) and Stephen McHattie (Pontypool) also star.

Day is a rarity, a unabashed female dork who’s actually really talented at what she does, so it’s good to see her getting headline material. Even if it just is for SciFi (for now…)

In honor of the recent Portal 2 announcement, watch her singing Still Alive in front of an incredibly geeky crowd at PAX two years ago.
