Eddie Murphy, who doesn’t even blip on the disappointment radar with his pandering bullshit roles anymore, will be padding his pockets with some of that extremely fat Smurfs/Chipmunks cash by starring in his own live-action/CGI cartoon adaptation. The target this time will be Hong Kong Phooey, who will slam into things and inconvenience a A (minus) list human in a big city.

The film will be directed by Alex Zamm, who has made a career out of video sequels to films like Inspector Gadget, The Tooth Fairy, and fucking Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Of course, he’s not totally devoid of original directorial projects on his resume…

The synopsis will essentially remain what you 70s kids remember:

The property revolves around a dog, Penry, to be played by Murphy, who is granted mystic powers, including the ability to walk, talk and do kung fu. Donning a costume to become Hong Kong Phooey, he sets out to combat criminals.

Brett Ratner is also an exec producer on this, with the producer and star recently joined for Tower Heist, the trailer for which hates Matthew Broderick.

I don’t really know what else to say. The only thing I know of Hong Kong Phooey is the Sublime take on the opening theme from some CD I once had. They’ll make a bunch of money, we’ll make a bunch of jokes. Maybe it will nearly trump some blockbuster action movie with a lot of people in it and make an interesting story, otherwise I’m done forever!
