It appears that Joel Silver’s next big-budget tentpole target is that famous charger of windmills, Don Quixote. This is a supposed action/adventure blockbuster in the vein of Pirates of The Caribbean that will follow an apparently sane Quixote through a series of adventures in a world where his traditionally delusional visions actually exist. It’s unclear to me why such a profound change in the premise of the story is necessary –you can keep Quixote crazy and still make a pandering, base-appealing film out of it– but that’s not going to stop Silver and Warner Brothers.
Sadly, with the project being fast-tracked it will probably manage to get put together and shot sooner than The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Terry Gilliam’s long-troubled dream project. Robert Duvall and Ewan McGregor are both attached to that much smaller-budget production, but in a “I’ll believe it when I see it” sort of way.
One hopes that these films don’t become another pair of similarly timed projects whose proximity creates a context of rivalry and surrounds them both with baggage.
