Dear fans of classic Universal monsters: hope you liked
The Gill Man, the only major catalog creature to evade severe molestation by Stephen Sommers, will now have the same wrangler as Matthew McConaughey — Breck Eisner is helming the endlessly water-treading remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The original 1954 followed an Amazon expedition crew that discovers a prehistoric fish-dude who digs chicks. For his remake plans, Eisner says "What I really want to do is update an iconic image from the ’50s and bring in more of the sci-fi sensibility of Alien or John Carpenter’s The Thing." His directing skills may remain in question, but he sure knows how to pillow talk the fanboys.
The remake (set up at Universal, duh) is produced and written by Seabiscuit helmer Gary Ross, whose father Arthur penned the original. Everyone from Ivan Reitman to Guillermo del Toro were previously rumored to be swimming around the director’s chair on the remake before Disney kid Breck climbed aboard.
