When Jeremy wrote about Ang Lee taking on Elliot Tiber’s Taking Woodstock as his next picture, he mused about a possible reunion with Tobey Maguire. As it turns out, Lee (and Focus Features head James Schamus, also co-writing) are going with a less proven lead.
Variety reports that comedian Demetri Martin is negotiating to star as Tiber, an in-the-closet gay man working at his parents’ motel in the Catskills, who inadvertently sets in motion the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969.
I like Martin’s comedy; it doesn’t demand attention and is sharp enough to work in small doses. And anyone who makes a joke like “every fight’s a food fight when you’re a cannibal” is OK with me. But as a dramatic lead he’s an unknown quantity.(Though we’ll see him soon in both Rainn Wilson’s The Rocker and the long-awaited Alexis Bledel/Michael Keaton teamup The Post Grad Survival Guide.) Would Martin be far removed from Zach Braff?
