You’re right, Deadpool. Something is tingling, but I’m not sure it’s common sense.

According to Deadline,  Deadpool up and has a director! Wow! Bang! Awesome! Just like that? Well, who is it?

Visual effects wizard Tim Miller.

Oh.  Look, I’m all for tapping unknown talent and giving some promising talent his first shot.   Miller has a nice history with the X-Men — he did the VFX for X-Men and X2 — and he’s worked closely with many directors.  I imagine one picks up a lot from David Fincher, Zack Snyder and James Cameron even when the film you’re all working on — Heavy Metal — doesn’t take off.    He’s currently working on The Dark Tower VFX with Ron Howard.  I’m sure Miller has lots of potential.

But does that mean he should be doing Deadpool?   This seems counter intuitive to what Fox was doing to revive their franchises by bringing on respected directors like Darren Aronofsky and Matthew Vaughn.  This is a character Fox swore they would get right after what they did to him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  (Which, incidentally, was the last time we got a — somewhat — untried director at the helm of a mutant movie.)

Deadpool is a slam dunk if handled right. Fox seems determined not to do that.  Run while you can, Ryan Reynolds.
