I am a staunch supporter of one Danny Boyle. That staunchness is strained after Sunshine took a perfectly interesting idea and shoved hot pokers in its ass. The Blurvillain of ’07 shant be forgotten for some time, but I’ll defend Millions, A Life Less Ordinary, and even The Beach as worthwhile if not superlative films and if you don’t think Trainspotting is one of the best films of the 90’s you ought to be stampeded by Shannon Whirry’s fan club.

Danny Boyle is not a staunch supporter of me if his new film Slumdog Millionaire is any indication. Get wind of this plot:

"Based on true events and scripted by Simon Beaufoy ("The Full Monty"),
it’s the story of an illiterate street kid from Mumbai who wins the
jackpot on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
"

Excitement.

Hasn’t Boyle already done a film about kids who land a windfall? I’m not asking for Shallower Grave… but Boyle’s too gifted to be doing films better suited for Lasse Hallström or Ken Olin. Then again, maybe he wants to stretch his horizons a little, mix it up. He’s conquered horror and thriller and drug culture genres. Maybe it’s time for him to contribute to the boring film genre.

If that’s the case, shine on Danny!
