Day Fourteen – Gremlins

Let’s first agree that ‘Gremliny’ is the cutest word ever. What a great adjective that could be. For example, a lot of people think Keira Knightley is hot but her mouth is a bit gremliny. Gremlins is a blast. Were it not for Gremlins we’d never had heard Corey Feldman discuss the “Putrid Phase”. We’d never know that Hoyt Axton could perform off the country stage. That Dick Miller was the best thing. I’d never had named my first cat Gizmo. If this poster had been released in America no one would have built those memories. The Polish have brought the world many things like knock-off hats and sweaters but their finest export by far has been their movie posters, bizarre and oftentimes jaw-dropping interpretations of films from all over the world. Sometimes literal examinations of their source but sometimes absolutely batshit pieces of art that almost take on a life of their own. Gremlins was rewarded with a poster that looks like The Other Sister designed it. It’s a rough two-dimensional shitmare.

What would this movie be like?

Abstract. Totally not deserving of a giant STEVEN SPIELBERG all over the place. Freudian. Dystopian. Sybilldanningian.

Who is the audience for this film?

The blind. The dumb. The unfeeling. Me.

What the fucking fuck is fucking fucking?

This piece of work could have come out of random colored paper falling onto the floor or from the mind of a supervillain with Down’s Syndrome.

Tagline vs. Tagline?

The American poster teases a veritable Pandora’s Box of danger and curiosity both with the image and the tagline. The Polish poster teases an acid trip where strangers throw rocks at you.

What other movies could effectively use this poster?

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Brazil. Gummo. Irreversible. Enchanted.

Tomorrow: The Ultimate Vagina.
