It’s been a long journey for everyone’s favorite “Lakeshore Strangler turned Homicidal Doll,” Chucky. We’ve watched him grow from one child’s plaything into a loving husband, doting dad and now purveyor of direct-to-DVD cinema in his new film, Curse of Chucky. Indeed, Chucky will finally arrive at a medium he honestly should have visited two films ago. Here’s Moviehole:
In this new film, which is being produced for DVD, Chucky arrives to wreck havoc within a family that’s regrouped for a funeral. In the wake of her mother’s passing, a young woman – in a wheelchair since birth – is forced to put up with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and their nanny as they say their goodbyes to mother. When people start turning up dead, the fearless Nica discovers the culprit might be a “strange doll” she was sent a couple of days earlier.
So that’s the bad news: direct-to-DVD and all the trappings (low budget, C-listers, disc scratches). Here’s the good news: Brad Dourif. Wormtongue is once again present as Chucky’s voice in this, his sixth Child’s Play film. Also reassuring is Chucky’s creator, Don Mancini is tapped as director. Before that sounds like too good a thing, he also directed Seed of Chucky. Still, it’s nice that the two gentleman who have been with the character the longest are getting to play in the sandbox on their own terms, free of Platinum Dunes.
