Action-comedy? From the guy that made the great Narc (a film that still holds up very well after three years)? Eh, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Apparently, writer/director Joe Carnahan has been set up to take the reigns on a film entitled Smokin’ Aces, "an ensemble action-comedy dealing with the disappearance of a semi-famous Las Vegas magician," according to Production Weekly.

Here’s a brief rundown that I’m (again) going to copy and paste since, to be perfectly honest, I’m a bit too drunk to write something even remotely creative (thank God for spell/grammar check): "When Las Vegas performer-turned-gangster, Buddy Israel, decides to turn state’s evidence and testify against the mob, it seems that a whole lot of people would like to see him dead."

Production will supposedly start in mid-October with photography taking place in both Los Angeles and Lake Tahoe (No Vegas?). Carnahan (who seriously needs to bust out another film pronto) has got a pretty empty plate what with only Killing Pablo (starring Javier Bardem as Pablo Escobar – a stroke of GREAT casting) lined up next. When will we hear more on that one? Hopefully soon. The book from which it’s based on (by Black Hawk Down writer Mark Bowden) is apparently pretty damn good. And getting a damn good movie (that we all know Carnahan can deliver) would be nice.
