It looks as if Focus Features has decided to settle on a subtly Inceptionesque mode of presentation for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy as it approaches release, which I assume will bleed over into TV spots and the like. It’s more than the “epic puzzle” motion graphics and the music that begins with such resolute notes, it’s the accelerated cutting through imagery that plays up the architectural photography, the archaic technology, and the intricate deceptions at the heart of the story. I’m already on board for the film, so they can pretty much sell it however they want and I’m not going to complain. It’s a shrewd move though, as it may help drive this a little deeper into public consciousness.
I like that some of the more obvious, trite lines like “things aren’t always what they seem” and “we’re not so different, you and I” aren’t as big of a focus and just generally feel better. It’s clear they cut hard and deep with the dialogue to clarify and make sure specific things are enunciated for unfamiliar audiences. Definitely some Frankenstein lines in this one.
I’ve made it clear how I excited I am for the film, even if I’ve already been disappointed by a shifting release date. That hasn’t changed. I’m ravenous for this film, and I imagine many of you are too.
