As the day comes to an end it occurred to me that this is the first anniversary of September 11th, 2001 that marks the country really having put the event behind us. The one, five, and ten-year anniversaries were such huge milestones, and ones that were huge goalposts around which reflection and remembrance was highly focused. After a decade though, it’s unlikely the anniversary will seize that kind of cultural unity of attention again until another decade has passed, and by then the memories will be even longer faded, the hindsight more potent, and the event itself closer to being fully symbolic. As loaded as the date 9/11 remains, there are now teenagers that don’t remember it, the same way I don’t remember the first WTC bombing.
In any event, as I’ve contemplated these ideas throughout the day in the back of my mind, I ran across this supercut that brings together many of the dozens of appearances the buildings had in films as part of the iconic New York skyline. Considering this was posted last year and that today should be more for remembering the fallen people rather than buildings, I only bring it up as an interesting side-note for your day. It was new to me, so I’m sure it will be new to some of you. I also like that it is upbeat and celebratory rather than melodramatic or overly somber.
