No comedy of the last few years is more deserving of a cult following than MacGruber, a film I seriously love. The movie bombed in theatres back in 2010 (appropriate, no?) but has since assembled a devoted fan base. MacGruber‘s the sort of pleasant surprise that not only defies all expectations, but leaves an upper-decker in your heart on its way out the door. So when director Jorma Taccone (also of those SNL digital shorts) talks sequel, I listen:
It would be me, Will and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is.
Far from concrete, but at least the proper players are talking. Will Forte hasn’t gotten his due since leaving SNL, but I do believe he has a place in film. Please, someone, make this happen. If whomever were to swoop in and greenlight a sequel were able to keep a lid on the budget (which would not be difficult), there’s no reason a MacGruber 2 couldn’t turn a profit. In the meantime, I’ll watch the original on Blu and hope for the best. I suggest you do the same.
